Why You Need to Spring Clean Your Life in 2023
It's that time of year again! As you're no doubt aware, "spring-cleaning" is a pretty popular concept that's been around forever. In fact, I'm guessing that you probably already do a thorough cleaning of your home or throw out what you don't need to make room for the new - but have you ever thought about applying the same idea to your life?
As we declutter our homes of things we no longer need or use, it’s also equally important to rid our lives of negativity, toxicity, and usher in a healthier frame of mind and better habits. Doing so can lead to a better quality of life, more joy, and satisfaction as you can start your spring on a fresh note getting rid of the ideas, habits, or behaviors that no longer serve you. Especially over the last few years, some of us have adopted unhelpful habits, or understandably increased our avoidance responses to stress and constant uncertainty during the pandemic (take out and Netflix or video games, anyone?), and taken on extra responsibilities around the house that maybe left us too tired to do self-care or decluttering of our mental spaces as well. If there is anything we've learned over the last few years, it's that we can't control everything, but we can learn to control ourselves and the way we handle situations.
If you’ve never done anything like it before, don’t worry! I've come up with ten tips, so you can perform a thorough and personal spring-cleaning for your life.
Let’s jump right in!
10 Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Life
1. Focus & Detox Your Mind
“Empty the old thoughts, emotions, and words, in your body and mind, so that your heart can show you the new story you came to live” -Roxana Jones
Perhaps the most important step is to detox your mind. Most of us have been in a constant state of anxiety, stress, glued to the news feeling scared, angry, panicked. Start by shutting off all the distractions, multi-tasking, rushing, notifications, buzzing, etc. Take some time to really gain clarity on which thoughts, fears, worries, or have been overwhelming you. Try to limit your news intake for starters and see what things in your life you do have control over. Next, take an overview of your normal day, do you have any habits or behaviors that are sabotaging you or are preventing you from moving forward? Do you have any energy zappers during your day? What's sucking away your energy, peace or happiness?
The fact is that we only have control over our minds and unfortunately not over every situation. But we can respond or react. Try integrating mindfulness into your routine to keep a clearer mind with less overwhelm and more clarity.
2. Throw Out Negative Habits
In many ways, we’re a product of all of our ingrained thoughts, habits, rituals, and patterns. Because they influence how we live our lives, we have to do an honest overview to identify our self-defeating behaviors and habits by recognizing their impact on how we live. What negative habits to you have in areas of your life (finance, family, health and fitness, work, and so on) that you should 'throw out'? Compare your current state with your ideal state to understand the reasons why you haven’t reached your full potential yet.
“Knowledge is learning something new everyday. Wisdom is letting go of some bad habits everyday.” ― Farshad Asl
Take a step back and ask yourself:
Is this habit aligned with my goals?
Why do I do this?
Am I doing it out of societal or peer pressure?
The next time you feel compelled to engage in habits that don't align with your goals, try distracting yourself with an alternate activity.
3. Unplug, Reflect on Your Goals and Intentions
Phones, televisions, and other forms of entertainment are great for fun and to escape when things are uncertain and overwhelming, but they can take your attention away from important things in life. If you did this over the last few years to get away mentally from what was happening, it's OK. No is saying you needed to get a degree over the last few years online or learn to play an instrument. Be gentle on yourself. Still, many people have the feeling the last few years were simply a waste of their lives, but it's not too late to take advantage of the time now and invest in yourself.
Make an attempt to unplug and reflect on your life. Tune into your thoughts, and ask yourself, “What’s holding me back from becoming my highest self?”
Identify any hurdles and actively work to address them whether they’re your thoughts, uncertainty, or a lack of self-confidence. What would you need to do to improve these areas in your life?

4. Forgive Yourself and Others
Forgiving yourself and others is easier said than done but it’s absolutely worth it. If you think that forgiveness is “doing the other person a favor,” think again. Forgiveness is releasing yourself from the hurt to let it go. It does not mean that what they did is OK. It doesn't mean you need to have a relationship with that person. It means you're ready to let go and move forward for yourself. Not for them.
“Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies.” ― Nelson Mandela
According to an article published by the American Psychological Association, forgiveness is good for your physical and mental health. Holding on to ill feelings and grudges isn’t hurting the other person as much as it is hurting yourself.
Most importantly, forgive yourself for your past failures, mistakes, and bad decisions. When you allow yourself to let go and heal, you'll notice how much easier it is to move on and reach your full potential.
5. Re-examine Your Relationships
Is there someone in your life who is toxic and drains your energy? Personal spring cleaning is an opportunity to re-examine your relationships, particularly the negative ones, and decide where they fit in your life. It's ok to create space where you need it from people sometimes for your own self-care.
Give yourself permission to let go of unhealthy relationships so that you can focus on nurturing connections that support and uplift you instead.
“Losing does not always amount to a loss, sometimes you have to lose those toxic relationships and bad habits to create a space for better things.” ― Gift Gugu Mona
6. Revamp Your Fitness Routine & Fitness Goals
How much time do you spend on exercise and activities that help you stay fit? With work and responsibilities at home, it’s too easy to let our fitness goals get sidetracked. Re-establish and recommit yourself to your fitness goals and routines.
Even if you’re consistent with exercise, it wouldn’t hurt to do a quick assessment of how you’re doing and how you can improve your fitness routine. You can try new activities or reformulate your goals. Exercise not only helps you stay in shape but can also help you manage stress.
7. Eat a Healthier Diet
Combined with the right exercise, a healthier diet can help speed you along to reaching your fitness goals. You’ll look and feel better about yourself too.
Examine what you’re currently eating. Are there certain foods that you should eat less or more of? Are there ways for you to enjoy healthier meals? Take a look at what you’re eating and make sure you have a balanced diet.
To make the change more sustainable, adopt one change at a time.
You are what you eat, so don't be fast, cheap, easy, or fake.” – Unknown. ...
“Keeping baggage from the past will leave no room for the happiness in the future” -Wayne L.Misner
Actual spring cleaning can do you a world of good. It not only declutters your space but also relieves stress. Do a quick audit and remove unnecessary items from your home. Create three piles — things to keep, items to throw away, and pieces you can donate.
If you struggle with self-reflection and don’t know where to start, journaling can pave the way to greater cognitive awareness. Writing helps you acknowledge how you’re feeling, where you’re at, and can help you decide on what you need to do next.
In addition, a study found that people who took up the habit saw a significant reduction in their symptoms of depression and anxiety. This was the case even among the 80% who didn’t have a lot of experience in journaling.
10. Get a Life Coach
Some people manage to create their goals, intentions and change their behaviors all by themselves. But let's be honest, it's not always so easy to do and sometimes we can end up procrastinating, sabotaging ourselves, or sometimes we know something feels off in our life in areas of fulfillment or happiness and we simply don't know what to do about it. If you feel like this, you're not alone. I've had a life coach over the last few years and it's completely transformed my life to allow me to actually DO the things I want to do. Life coaches are invaluable in providing direction and guidance as you go about changing your life for the better. They are trained to help you reach your goals and form healthier habits.
You need a life coach on your side if you:
Have goals but don't know how to achieve them or where to start
Are frustrated with feeling stuck and disappointed with where you are in life but not sure exactly how to find balance in your priorities to make that happen
Are concerned about the increasing costs of not achieving your goals and improving your habits for the better
Don't want to waste any more time going through the grueling soul-searching process without the right support
Manifest your ideal self by rephrasing your subconscious’ limiting beliefs. Instead of saying “I don’t know how to do this,” say instead “I will take active steps to learn this.”
